Press Release – November 16, 2009

Rebuilding Together Duneland is accepting homeowner applications for the April 24, 2010 work day. The deadline is December 31, 2009.

Rebuilding Together Duneland (RTD) fills a pressing need in our communities. The rising cost of living and falling social service budgets have left some of our most vulnerable neighbors without the most basic of necessities; a warm, safe and dry home. The nation is facing enormous problems, many of which have reached crisis levels. Homeownership is at an all time high, especially among low to mid-income Americans, but the costs of owning and maintaining a home are growing exponentially. Healthcare costs are skyrocketing, leaving low-income citizens with less and less disposable income and having to choose between vital necessities and essential home repairs and modifications. Chesterton’s 2009 tornado caused considerable damage to many homes.

Rebuilding Together Duneland, an affiliate of the nation’s leading nonprofit organization Rebuilding Together, works to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities. One example is Cynthia who could not get affordable home insurance because of her unsafe electrical connections. She had 60 amp services which were considered very unsafe; therefore, she was a high risk to insure. She could not afford the updated electrical service that was needed. RTD volunteers installed new electrical service by going through her plaster walls. “It took more than one day to complete the project,” said Cynthia. “The volunteers couldn’t be nicer. I didn’t know what to expect, but it wound up being more than I expected. They also painted my laundry room and worked in my yard. It was hard to believe that so many people were willing to help…..it made me want to cry. To see how hard the volunteers worked and how nice they all were means a lot to a person who has always struggled. I now have insurance that I bought from one of the volunteers and my utility bills have come down. My daughter and I want to volunteer to help others at the next work day.”

Rebuilding Together Duneland (RTD) is seeking donations, house sponsors as well as applicants at this time of year. Remember Rebuilding Together Duneland when you are preparing your year-end tax deductions. With the help of sponsors, donors and volunteers we can preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities by providing free home modifications and repairs; making homes safer, more accessible and more energy efficient.

Emergency projects are accepted year-round. If you or anyone you know needs help, applications are available at Ace Hardware, Chesterton Tribune, Duneland Chamber, Duneland Resale Shop, Westchester Food Pantry, Westchester Public Library, Westchester Township Trustee’s Office and the Town of Chesterton Building Department. Requests for an application may be sent to us at P.O. Box 644 Chesterton, IN 46304, via email to info@rtduneland.org or call us at 926-3233.
